Why this matters
Today, only 18% of families fit the "traditional" nuclear family model, while research shows that about 5% of adults practice consensual non-monogamy. These numbers reflect the growing diversity of how Americans build meaningful relationships and organize their families. Yet without legal protections, these individuals and families face discrimination in housing, employment, services, and more. By passing non-discrimination protections, we can ensure that everyone is treated with respect and dignity, regardless of how they structure their relationships and families.
Progress so far
In 2023, the cities of Somerville and Cambridge, MA became the first US cities to introduce nondiscrimination protections on the basis of family or relationship structure. In 2024, Oakland and Berkeley, CA followed suit. These groundbreaking laws protect both non-normative families and non-monogamous relationships from discrimination.
