Building protections for family and relationship structures in California

OPEN is working with local leaders to bring non-discrimination protections to communities across the state. From the San Francisco Bay Area to West Hollywood and beyond, we're building momentum for legislation that protects all families and relationships, no matter their shape.

What We're Working Toward

OPEN is partnering with local advocates across California to pass ordinances to add "family or relationship structure" as a protected category in cities' existing non-discrimination laws.

These protections cover diverse families and relationships including consensually non-monogamous relationships, multi-partner and multi-parent families, multi-generational households, chosen families, stepfamilies and blended families, single-parent households, and asexual and aromantic relationships.

Where we stand

In 2024, OPEN led the push to pass nondiscrimination protections in Berkeley and Oakland.

Now, we’re supporting local organizing efforts in San Francisco and West Hollywood, with plans to expand into Santa Cruz and Sacramento. Click here to learn more about our work in San Francisco, where we’re working closely with the grassroots San Francisco Family and Relationship Equity Coalition. If you're interested in joining or leading an organizing effort in your city, please get in touch!

Our immediate focus is connecting with allied organizations, building community support, and advocating for these protections in cities across the state.
