Building protections for family and relationship structures in Michigan

OPEN is partnering with local advocates across Michigan to pass ordinances that would add "family or relationship structure" as a protected category in cities' existing non-discrimination laws.

We're currently supporting grassroots organizing efforts in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Ferndale, with plans to expand into Detroit and explore opportunities in Grand Rapids.

This protection would cover diverse families and relationships including consensually non-monogamous relationships, multi-partner and multi-parent families, multi-generational households, chosen families, stepfamilies and blended families, single-parent households, and asexual and aromantic relationships.

What We're Working Toward

Where we stand

Local organizers are building community coalitions and identifying potential city council sponsors across our target cities. We're hopeful for policy introduction in at least one city by mid-2025.

Our immediate focus is on gathering petition signatures, connecting with allied organizations, and demonstrating community support for these protections in each target city.
