Building protections for family and relationship structures in Michigan

OPEN is working with local leaders to bring non-discrimination protections to communities across Michigan. From Detroit to Ferndale and Ypsilanti to Lansing, we're building momentum for legislation that protects all families and relationships, no matter their shape.

What We're Working Toward

Local Discrimination Protections

OPEN is working with local advocates across Michigan to pass ordinances that add "family or relationship structure" as a protected category in cities' existing non-discrimination laws.

These protections cover diverse families and relationships including consensually non-monogamous relationships, multi-partner and multi-parent families, multi-generational households, chosen families, stepfamilies and blended families, single-parent households, and asexual and aromantic relationships.

Repealing Michigan’s Anti-Adultery Law

Michigan is one of 15 US states where adultery is illegal, making non-monogamous relationships a crime if any of the participants are married. We hope to repeal this antiquated and unconstitutional law by reviving a stalled 2024 repeal effort in the MI State Senate.

Where we stand

We're currently supporting grassroots organizing efforts in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Ferndale, with plans to expand into Detroit and Grand Rapids. If you're interested in joining or leading an organizing effort in your city, please get in touch!

Our immediate focus is connecting with allied organizations, building community support, and advocating for these protections in cities across the state.
